Jason Quinlan

Research Fellow

Jason is a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology in University College Cork. Prior to this appointment, he was a Senior Post-Doc researcher in the iVID project under the supervision of Prof. Cormac Sreenan.

His Post-Doctoral Research positions focused on HTTP Adaptive Video (DASH) with specific reference to the benefits of in-network SDN intelligence, while his PhD candidature focused on adaptive and scalable media streaming. Through these areas he have vast knowledge in the techniques, models and protocols utilized by current media streaming services and network protocols.

Jason is active on technical programme committees of many of the top-ranked venues in his field, such as ACM Multimedia (MM), Packet Video Workshop (PV), Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft) and ACM Multimedia Systems, as well as in journals such as Multimedia Systems Journal (MMSJ), Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications (TOMM) and IEEE Transactions on Multimedia.

Jason is a strong believer in mentoring and has supervised Final Year and MSc projects since his PhD candidature.  He also runs the ‘MISL Summer of Code’ which is a personal outreach initiative in which students from local secondary schools and third level institutions (foreign and domestic) intern in UCC during the summer recess. The goal of the initiative is to provide the students with access to a research lead project, in which they enhance their programming, logistical and development skills. In the pilot project, he had two students intern during the summer of 2018. The students applied a Quality of Experience standard into one of our headless video players. This work was submitted for publication.  In the second year of the MISL Summer of Code, he currently has five students intern during the summer of 2019. Initial work is focused on developing a new headless DASH adaptive video player as well as areas such as AR/VR, 5G (mmwave) simulation in NS-3, multi-core processing, DASH video algorithm implementation, Deep/Machine Learning, and Alexa skills.

Through the electrical contracting firm (Quinlan Development), he has over 20+ years in senior management with responsibility for budgeting, contract cost estimation, Health & Safety policy, overseeing compliance with electrical standards bodies, administration, project management, customer-centric communication, employee conflict resolution, and focused evaluation of suppliers and products. Jason has a wealth of technical and transferable skills.
