Dr Madhusanka Liyanage, Funded Investigator at CONNECT, UCD, Among Top 1,000 Young Researchers Shaping the Future of Science on Research.com

22 August – Dr Madhusanka Liyanage has been recognised as one of the top 1,000 young researchers shaping the future of science by Research.com. This notable recognition underscores the valuable contributions of rising scientists worldwide, with Dr Liyanage counted among just five researchers based in Ireland.

Dr Liyanage is a Funded Investigator at CONNECT, University College Dublin (UCD), where his research primarily focuses on the security and privacy aspects of 5G/6G softwarised mobile networks. His work at UCD also extends to his roles as an Associate Professor, Ad Astra Fellow, and Director of Graduate Research at the School of Computer Science. Additionally, he serves as a Adjunct Professor at University of Oulu, Finland, University of Sri Jayawardhanapura, Sri Lanka.

At UCD, Dr Liyanage leads the Network Softwarisation and Security Laboratory (NetsLab), where he is at the forefront of utilising advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Federated Learning (FL) and Blockchain, coupled with cutting-edge cryptographic tools, to enhance the security and privacy of next-generation networks. His expertise has been further recognised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), where he is a senior member, and was awarded the “2020 IEEE ComSoc Outstanding Young Researcher” by IEEE ComSoc EMEA.

His research career includes visiting fellowships at institutions such as CSIRO in Australia, Lancaster University in the UK, the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney in Australia, Sorbonne University in France, and the University of Oxford in the UK. Dr Liyanage has also been recognised with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship and the Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Throughout his career, Dr Liyanage has secured over €8 million in competitive research grants and has contributed to more than twenty EU, international, and national ICT projects.  He is currently a P.I. for five large EU H2020/Horizon Europe projects on 6G and AI security including three 6G SNS projects. He plays a key role as the Irish national coordinator for EU COST Action projects and serves as an expert consultant at the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA). Furthermore, he acts as a reviewer for funding agencies in several countries, including EC, France, New Zealand, Switzerland, Qatar, the UAE, Sri Lanka, and Kazakhstan.
