Emmett Carolan, a CONNECT PhD student at Maynooth University has won First Prize for Best Research Paper at the 7th International Conference on Mobile Networks and Management, organised by the European Alliance for Innovation, in Santander, Spain.
Emmett beat off strong competition from 40 other researchers representing universities from across Europe to win the award.
Emmett is pursuing doctoral research work with Dr Ronan Farrell and Dr Séamus McLoone at the CONNECT Centre in Maynooth University.
“My research work explores ways of making mobile phone networks deliver better quality at a reduced cost,” Emmett explains.
“For this paper, we examined the usage on mobile phone networks in Dublin city and county over three months and found ways of reducing the power used by the network during off-peak times”.
“An award like this highlights the relevance and high standard of Emmett’s research,” according to Dr Ronan Farrell, Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering at Maynooth University. “There are very rewarding career paths in the field of electronic engineering,” he added.
Emmett completed a double honours degree in physics and computer science in 2010 at Maynooth University followed by a Master’s Degree in electronic engineering. He is now in the final year of his doctoral research at Maynooth University.
