On 14th and 15th June, VMware, with participation of Senior Executives from VMware including CTO Kit Colbert and Senior VP Huseyin Dursun met with the CONNECT Centre team for a technical workshop on new technologies to improve sustainability in future networks and their applications.
Discussions between VMware and CONNECT have been ongoing since autumn last year on a broad range of ideas for research of mutual interest to both partners. VMware and CONNECT have agreed to further develop research collaborations along three strands of research which can be broadly described as low latency access to highly dynamic shared data, location-aware function placement at the edge, and sustainable architectures to deliver such future advanced capabilities for beyond 5G and 6G networks. These three strands of collaboration form a starting point for an ongoing partnership between CONNECT and VMware on future networks.
Prof. Dan Kilper, CONNECT Centre Director says that “VMware is shaping the future of networks through its platforms that support softwarization and intelligent operation, which makes them an ideal partner for the full scale of CONNECT spanning from physical layer devices all the way through the network layers to the applications. With an ability to test and experiment using advanced testbeds such as Open Ireland and Radiospace, we are placed in an excellent position to collaborate with VMware, where we can address data centre technology solutions as well as the emerging businesses in telecoms and next generation radio networks. The collaboration will form powerful expertise to address the major challenges of re-architecting networks to deliver sustainably across society while ensuring the Internet itself can continue to grow in a sustainable and human centred way.”
CTO Kit Colbert, VMware, commented that “As we advance and expand our Office of the CTO operations and R&D in Ireland, we see great opportunities to build a strategic relationship with the CONNECT Centre. It is clear through this visit that the expertise is a good fit for VMware, and complements our portfolio of academic collaborators globally. We have been impressed by the breadth and depth of the Centre, and appreciated how it can be accessed through a single research organization interface, and we look forward to continuing this collaboration.”
