George O’Mahony

Associate Investigator

Dr George O’Mahony is a CONNECT Associate Investigator at Munster Technological University.

Dr George O’Mahony is a cybersecurity lecturer and researcher with the Cyber Skills team at Munster Technological University. His research focuses on cyber resilience, resilient networks and network security, penetration testing (tactics, techniques and procedures), cyber range environment mapping and hybrid modelling, OT security verification, machine learning for cyber security, anomaly/attack detection and advanced attack scenario development.

George completed his Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Cork under an Irish Research Council Postgraduate Enterprise Partnership Scheme Scholarship in collaboration with United Technologies Research Centre Ireland, now Collins Aerospace. His Ph.D. research focused on enhancing security on resource-constrained edge devices in communication networks, namely Wireless Sensor Network, IoT (Internet of Things) and GPS applications. He developed intelligent low complexity interference diagnostic tools for wireless edge devices. His research applied support vector machines, k-NNs and decision tree-based (Random Forest, XGBoost, AdaBoost) machine learning approaches to achieve low-complexity solutions, while deep neural networks were also developed as the resource-intensive approach. George has won the “”Best Student Paper”” at ISSC 2020, the “”Best Paper”” at WTS 2020 and received an “”Outstanding Student Paper”” award at the WF-IoT 2020. Before commencing his Ph.D. in 2017, he worked as a research intern with United Technologies Research Center Ireland (Collins Aerospace) focused on Internet of Things device security and wireless communications. He received his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Cork in 2015, where is was chosen as UCC College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) Graduate of the year for 2015.

George is the scientific research lead in developing Ireland’s only Cyber Range infrastructure, including a Mobile Cyber Range, a state-of-the-art Traffic Generator and a cloud based deployment. He is a co-lead on the Cyber Shock SFI NCF project, a collaborator on the Horizon Europe projects – Telemetry and Digital Europe European Digital Innovation Hub and is the current WorldSkills Ireland Cybersecurity Expert. As part of his role as lecturer he is the course coordinator of and developed/co-developed a Security Penetration Testing & Analysis Pathway, a Secure Network Operations pathway and a HDip in Cybersecurity Operations. He also teaches a number of online cybersecurity modules across a range of academic programmes, including penetration testing, threat detection, secure networking and advanced red team analysis. He is a STEM advocate and is part of a number of related initiatives including the Cyber Futures Cybersecurity Academy.
