CONNECT Researchers Win Best Paper Award at IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference 2025

CONNECT, Research Ireland’s Centre for Future Networks, is delighted to announce that Dr. Aisling O’Driscoll,(UCC) a leading Funded Investigator at CONNECT and Tengfei Lyu (UCC) an Advance CRT PhD student, along with co-authors, have received the Best Paper Award at the 16th IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC). The conference took place in Porto, Portugal, from June 2–4, 2025.

Now in its 16th edition, VNC is the premier international venue for the community focused on cooperative and autonomous driving, as well as vehicular communication and networking more broadly. It brings together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to share state-of-the-art results and explore the next frontier in connected mobility.

The paper, entitled “Accuracy and Relevance: A Value of Information Based Prioritization of Perceived Objects for the ETSI Collective Perception Service,” was recognised as the Best Paper during the conference’s banquet award ceremony, which also celebrated excellence in demos, posters, presentations, and a runner-up paper.

First authored  by Tengfei Lyu and presented by Dr O’ Driscoll, the paper was also co-authored with Shuo Li (Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany), Florian Alexander Schiegg (Robert Bosch GmbH, Germany and rapporteur of the ETSI TS103 324 working group on Collective Perception Services) as well as other CONNECT Investigators Noor-A-Rahim Md., and Dirk Pesch (UCC, Ireland).

This impactful research proposes a novel approach to improving environmental awareness and safety through value-of-information-based prioritisation of objects within the ETSI Collective Perception Service—a foundational element of cooperative and autonomous vehicle systems. The work directly supports CONNECT’s mission to tackle the communications challenges of the future and highlights its focus on smart mobility and intelligent transport systems.

Dr. O’Driscoll co-leads the Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) Working Group at CONNECT. This award marks a significant recognition of her leadership and the strength of international academic-industry collaboration fostered within the CONNECT ecosystem.

Congratulations to Aisling, Tengfei and the full author team on this outstanding achievement, which reinforces the CONNECT Research Ireland Centre for Future Networks’ position at the forefront of cutting-edge research in future networks and connected mobility.
